Man arrested for attempted murder, assault after shooting at Sheriff's Deputies | Crime
CRENSHAW CO., AL (WSFA) - Crenshaw County Sheriff's Deputies were forced to return fire on a man after they responded to the scene of a domestic disturbance and were met with gun shots.
According to the Crenshaw County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the scene of a domestic disturbance in the 1700 block of Black Rock Road in Nov. 26 around 8:30 p.m.
Deputies first met with the victim at a neighbor's residence. Shortly after, the deputies returned to the scene of the call and exited their vehicles. When they attempted to make contact with the suspect, 35-year-old Yancey Joel Kelley, he opened fire on the deputies with an AR-15 223 caliber assault rifle.
Bullets from Kelley's assault rifle struck one of the patrol units 18 times. One deputy was struck with bullet fragments.
Deputies were forced to return fire - Kelley then threw his weapons including the assault rifle, a 9mm handgun and a knife out of the window of the residence.
Kelley surrendered to authorities and was booked on two counts of attempted murder, once count of assault first degree, one count of domestic violence third degree (assault), and one count of criminal mischief third degree.
Kelley remains in custody in the Crenshaw County Jail.
